Caries is a pathological process that leads to tooth decay. The occurrence of caries is associated with the activity of microorganisms and the fermentation of carbohydrates, which cause a change in acidity and alkalinity on the surface of the tooth and the formation of organic acids.
Whether caries occurs depends largely on the lifestyle: diet, oral hygiene, the presence of fluoride in water and toothpaste, as well as heredity.

Stages of caries development
Specialists distinguish four stages of the disease: spots on the teeth, superficial caries, medium and deep.
Caries in the stain stage is considered a reversible form. If you eliminate the cause in time and make up for the loss of calcium in the focus, you can restore the structure of the enamel and stop the process. The rest of the forms of caries proceed with the destruction of the hard tissues of the tooth.
Signs of caries
You can understand that you have caries by the following signs: discoloration of the enamel of your teeth; the appearance of pain from cold, hot, sweet, sour. Food stuck and bad breath may also indicate a problem.

Pulpitis develops, which is accompanied by acute pain. And in the absence of treatment or a decrease in immunity, periodontitis may develop. Then the tissues around the root of the tooth are involved in the inflammatory process - and foci of bone tissue damage appear.

Nutritionist Olga Bezuglaya and neurologist Ruslan Osadchuk admit that caries is an unpleasant disease, but it can be avoided. To prevent tooth decay, you can follow these guidelines.
- Brush your teeth thoroughly at least twice a day
In the morning and in the evening - with a paste containing fluoride. Ideally, after every meal. If this is not possible, chewing gum is recommended, for example, with xylitol. You need to chew the gum for no more than 10 minutes. This is enough to produce saliva, which neutralizes the acids in the mouth. Thanks to this, the remnants of food will be washed off, the pH will be restored.
- Avoid frequent snacking
If you frequently eat or drink beverages other than water, you are helping the bacteria in your mouth to form acids that destroy enamel.
- Choose food that is safe for your teeth
Certain foods and drinks can cause tooth decay - sweets, soda, soft foods. Choose non-carbonated water and abrasive foods such as fruits and vegetables. They will cleanse your mouth.
- Eat a balanced diet
Food should stimulate the chewing function, be firm, and replenish the body's needs for vitamins and microelements. First of all, it is worth reducing the intake of carbohydrate foods and adding foods rich in calcium and phosphorus to the diet, as well as protein foods - cheeses and high-quality meats.
- See your dentist regularly
In order to identify and eliminate dental diseases in time, it is necessary to visit a doctor at least once every six months.
